Why YvaMarie Founder Says ‘Everything You've Been Told About Hormonal Skin Is Wrong’

Why YvaMarie Founder Says ‘Everything You've Been Told About Hormonal Skin Is Wrong’

If you've spent your 40s chasing serums that sting, vitamin C formulas that burn, and retinols that leave your face dry, or raw and peeling, Marsha Guerrier has something important to say to you: It's not your skin. It's the advice you've been given.

"The industry pushes us toward thinking that the most clinical, most high-active ingredients are what we need," says Guerrier, founder of YvaMarie, a plant-based skin care line rooted in Haitian heritage beauty, or, as she has coined it: “H-Beauty.”

“The retinols, the vitamin Cs, all these new scientific buzzwords, you don't really need that. You need effective, good, organic products that will help you even out your skin tone and brighten your skin. Our skin is not that complicated, even when it's going through hormonal shifts."

Coming from a woman who spent years dealing with hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation, rough texture, and sensitivity, all at the same time, YvaMarie is a hard-won truth.

The Hormonal Skin Problem Nobody's Talking About Honestly

By the time most women reach their 40s and 50s, their skin has been through it. Puberty. Fertility treatments. Pregnancy. Postpartum changes. Perimenopause. Menopause. Each phase brings hormonal fluctuations that often show up directly on the face: inflammation, dryness, breakouts, redness, and a texture that makeup only seems to make worse.

What makes YvaMarie's answer to that question distinct is where it comes from. Haiti has quietly been one of the world's most significant contributors to the global beauty industry for generations; its soil just rarely gets the credit. Haiti is the leading global exporter of vetiver essential oil, and Haitian vetiver is prized by major perfume manufacturers worldwide for its smooth, refined aroma and exceptional quality. Haitian black castor oil,  known locally as lwil maskriti, has earned its reputation as "the liquid gold of the Caribbean," a traditional treasure with deep cultural roots, handcrafted using methods passed down through generations. Hibiscus, called choublak in Haitian Creole, has been used in Caribbean healing for centuries, and happens to be rich in compounds that brighten and exfoliate skin. The global beauty industry has been quietly sourcing these botanicals for decades. YvaMarie is simply the first to put Haitian women themselves at the center of the story.

Haiti's legacy of beauty runs even deeper, in 1962, Evelyn Miot became the first Black contestant to reach the semifinals at Miss Universe, a landmark moment in the racial integration of international beauty pageants. Haiti has always known beauty. It's time the skin care industry acknowledged where some of its best-kept secrets actually come from.

Marsha Guerrier knows this intimately. Before launching YvaMarie, she was a busy single mother and full-time entrepreneur who, by her own admission, had neglected her skin for years. "My face and my appearance and my skin was not a priority to me," she recalls. "I just dealt with my crackly skin. I thought it was normal."

When she finally turned her attention to skin care, she found that almost everything on the market either irritated her sensitive skin or simply didn't work. She tried a name-brand vitamin C serum. Her skin felt like it was on fire. She tried trending actives. Same result. The products being marketed to women like her, women in their late 40s navigating hormonal skin, were largely designed for someone else.

"Most people aren't comparing apples to apples," Guerrier explains. "They're buying based on influencers who are 25 or 30, and they're dealing with 40 or 50-year-old skin."

The Real Culprit: Inflammation

Here's what Guerrier learned and wants every woman with hormonal skin to understand: the breakouts, the dryness, the redness, they’re all rooted in one thing.

"Inflammation is the source of so many of our skin issues," she says. "The hormonal acne, the dryness, the redness, that's all inflammation. And if you can use products that are calming and soothing, you'll be amazed at what your skin can do."

This is the philosophy at the core of YvaMarie's Botanical Formula Science: an approach that combines plant-based, organic botanicals with carefully chosen modern actives at skin-friendly concentrations. Think gotu kola, goji berry, cloudberry seed oil, and squalane, all ingredients, she says, that calm inflammation, restore hydration, and deliver antioxidant benefits without triggering the sensitivity spirals that so many women in this age group experience.

"Our skin is trying to heal," Guerrier says simply. "Give it what it needs to do that."

What Actually Works for Hormonal Skin

For women presenting with the holy trinity of hormonal skin chaos, breakouts, dryness, and sensitivity all at once, Guerrier consistently recommends starting with YvaMarie's Botanic Glow collection.

The hero ingredient is niacinamide, a powerhouse anti-inflammatory that calms redness and regulates oil production without stripping the skin. It works alongside squalane, an oil that mirrors the skin's own natural lipids and aloe vera, a staple in Haitian households and one of the most clinically validated healing botanicals in the world. Even the cleanser is formulated to hydrate rather than strip, with green tea extract to further calm inflammation from the very first step of your routine.

The goal, Guerrier is clear, isn't “glass skin” or a dramatic transformation. It's something more fundamental.

"Everything for me is about healing our skin," she says. "It's not about having glass skin so you could look like a mannequin. The glow, that's going to be a result of everything you do once your skin is healed. You can't take a shortcut to it."
